STEAMBOAT SPRINGS: Seven thousand feet up in the Colorado Rockies sits the picturesque town of Steamboat Springs. Steamboat Springs earned it's name in the mid-1800s when fur trappers crossing over the Continental Divide heard a strange sound coming from a mineral spring that reminded them of a Steamboat. The town was settled in 1875 by James Crawford and his family.
Steamboat combines small town charm with a world class ski resort. It is best known for it's champagne powder created by the dry and arid climate. Although Steamboat averages about 300 days of sunshine every year it receives an incredible 345 inches of snow per year.
Steamboat may be known for the famous skiing, but as most locals will tell you they came for the winter but stayed for the summer. Steamboat offers a multitude of summer activities including mountain biking, fishing, hiking, kayaking, off road recreation, and scenic golfing. And, with over 100 restaurants and bars there is something for the whole family.
There is a local Indian legend that says "Once you visit the Yampa Valley your heart will forever be captivated, and compelled to return again and again". | |
